Alice Tully Hall was transformed as part of Lincoln Center's $1.2 billion campus redevelopment effort.
Located within a 1960s brutalist structure by Pietro Belluschi, Alice Tully's former building was a cloistered / bunker-like venue that felt disconnected from the urban fabric and pulse of modern New York. The renovation and expansion by Architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro introduced large expanses of clear glass to reintegrate the theater with the bustling street life of the city. At night these glass walls disappear, providing transparency and openness in harmony with Lincoln Center's mission of bringing the performing arts to everyday people.
The 1,000+ seat theater underwent complete renovation, with a signature lighting element that causes select areas of the theater and stage walls to glow prior to (and sometimes during) performances. The opaque wood and resin+wood veneer wall panels are indistinguishable throughout the theater until the moment of the magic glow.
